We sat down with DJ Russ over at Chicas Locas in Dallas, a large gentlemen’s club offering both a full liquor side and a BYOB side. We asked him what it’s like to play the party for the people in Dallas, and how he keeps the energy high on both sides of the club. Read on to hear more about his approach to keeping the crowd engaged and what makes the Chicas Locas experience one-of-a-kind. Be sure to show up at Chicas Locas to see what the party is all about!

What type of music do you enjoy playing most at Chicas Locas? Does your playlist vary depending on the crowd or vibe of the night?
I love to enjoy all genres of music based on the format we use in the club. It usually consists of four Latin songs after a round of country, classic rock, or even top 40s. I really enjoy watching the crowd, seeing them dance, moving their heads, hands, and legs following the music beats and vibes.

How would you describe the difference between the BYOB side and the full liquor side of the club in terms of the crowd and atmosphere?
Well, the BYOB side is different in terms of dancer rules and VIP dances. I cover shifts on both sides, and I feel my promos at the mic are a bit different depending on where I’m at. Sometimes I confuse myself saying things like “Get a bottle, get shots” when it’s BYOB! 😆

Do you notice a difference in the types of music that get the best response on the BYOB side compared to the full liquor side?
The music is pretty much the same on both sides, but with a little more open format on top 40s on the BYOB side. It’s more flexible than the regular country sets, but it all depends on the crowd.

How do you keep the energy high and maintain the crowd’s attention throughout the night, especially when switching between different musical genres?
You’ve got to read the crowd and keep everyone happy by playing the latest upbeat music and fresh hits while mixing in some classic songs that get the crowd singing, yelling, and screaming. It’s all about maintaining that party energy so everyone in the club is having a blast.

Are there any specific songs or genres you know the girls love to dance to? Do you tailor your set to fit what they prefer?
We play a lot of Cuban hits, and the dancers love it! Mixing in the new, fresh Spanish hits keeps everyone happy. It’s all about creating an experience where everyone can enjoy dancing and singing along while having a great time.

From your experience, do guests on the BYOB side seem to prefer different music genres than those on the full liquor side?
I’ve heard people say they prefer one side over the other—some love the BYOB vibe, and others prefer the full liquor side. It’s nice because each side offers a bit of a different experience, catering to different preferences.

What’s your approach to creating a seamless flow between songs, especially when moving between different types of crowd energy?
I like to read my crowd, and that helps me increase my energy. Watching people get crazy, having fun, pretending they’re playing drums or guitars, hitting the tables with their hands, and shaking their heads, it’s all about having a great time!
